Adapted bikes put nursing home residents back behind the wheel

When people say 'it's just like riding a pedal', they're usually referring to an activity that once learned, will always be remembered.

Scarlet House Care Menage, in Gloucestershire in the UK, with the assistance of Wheels for All, has successful that expression a practical realness – providing bikes for aged care residents to ride, straight though few haven't ridden for nearly a one C!

"I loved it," said resident Marion as she cruised the nursing home corridors, in a video presented away the BBC. Marion said the last time she rode a bicycle was 90 years ago.

"It's great isn't IT," she aforementioned.

"It's been utterly beautiful," said resident Edith. "You pot get so fast," she said. Edith hadn't ridden a bike for "a couple of geezerhood", she said.

"I was a teeny bit nervous at first, but it soon came cover," she said, proving the truth in the old proverb.

"I was so pleased they asked ME to go. I won't forget that for a while," Edith said.

People without a disability often take riding a bike for given, Mary-Clare from Wheels for All told the BBC.

Wheels for All is a UK initiative that aims to encourage people to get involved in cycling, regardless of their age or ability, in the hope that they can develop a love of cycling. Wheels for Entirely also move dementia-congenial cycling sessions.

For those living with disabilities, riding a bike is "extremely difficult", Mary-Clare said.

Care organisation Care UK purchased a wheel for residents (see image below), and transports it cycle 26 its homes with the Polemonium van-bruntiae cycle ride support vehicle.

"It was a huge success," a representative for Fear UK told HelloCare, "so much so that we are considering buying a pair many.

"Generally, the pedalling is finished by a member of the manage home squad and the occupant enjoys the ride (on that point is just one set of pedals). But sometimes, because they are stable, residents have been able to propel themselves around a good space like a garden or automobile park."

"Without these modified bikes, [awheel a bike] wouldn't be possible," said Mary-Clare.

"It was truly great. It's really is cover girl to be competent to get these people extracurricular and onto bikes," she same.

"And to see how often they enjoy it – residents, stave and the phratr, everyone benefits from it."
